Williamstown has made a dramatic straight-sets finals exit from the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league.
The Fearons went through the regular season undefeated but crumbled in the finals, with consecutive losses to the second and third-ranked sides.
The final nail was hammered in their coffin by Surrey Park in an 11-5 upset at Lower Eltham Park on Saturday.
The Fearons started confidently enough to take a 3-2 lead by quarter-time. But they managed just two goals from that point on.
Surrey Park will face defending champions Footscray in a rematch of last year’s season decider in Chadstone on Saturday.
In the women’s state league, Newport is through to an incredible 41st consecutive grand final after trouncing Williamstown 12-2 in the preliminary final on Saturday.
Hayley Sofarnos was outstanding for the Porters, with seven goals and two assists.
The Porters will be gunning for their 23rd premiership when they face reigning premier Footscray in the grand final.
The Scray have lost just once in the regular season. That was against Newport back in round four, so the rematch of last year’s grand final should be a cracker.
Williamstown has taken out the men’s division 1 title, beating Moreland 12-7 in the grand final.
Footscray claimed the main prize in division 2, rolling Williamstown 11-7 at the big dance.
Altona took the spoils, 17-11, over Williamstown in a high-scoring division 3 decider.
