Ethiopian-born Sinit Tsegay has organised a multicultural concert to raise funds to build a school in her homeland.
The Newport resident, who attends Mount St Joseph Girls College in Altona, is holding the concert at Yarraville’s Kindred Studios as part of a year 12 project.
The singer, actor and dancer says her dream is to produce events and projects to create positive change in the world.
“A group of Australian parents who adopt children from Ethiopia are helping the Friends of the Hudad, who are trying to build a school in Ethiopia in Lalibela,” Ms Tsegay, 18, said.
“I was doing work experience in multicultural arts and they suggested I do a project and I came across the Friends of the Hudad.”
Ms Tsegay said funds raised would ultimately help educate several hundred children and assist forest conservation, permaculture training and adult education.
The concert, Lalibela Above The Mountain, is on October 5 from 2-7pm.
Performers will include Jen Cloher, The Lalibelas, Amadou Kalissa, Gabriella Barbagallo, Yodit and Australia’s first hip-hop choir, the Massive Choir.
There will be Ethiopian food, a traditional coffee ceremony and an auction of a painting by Ethiopian artist Tamrat Gebremariam.
