Disability advisory council applicants wanted

People with lived experience of disability are being urged to apply to join the Victorian Disability Advisory Council.

Disability Minister Lizzie Blandthorn last week announced that applications to join the advisory council were open, with those from diverse backgrounds such as First Nations people, multicultural communities and the LGBTIQA+ community particularly encouraged to apply.

Members of the council provide policy and strategic advice to government to improve the participation and inclusion of Victorians with a disability and ensure their voices are heard.

A maximum of 14 positions are available, including two positions for First Nations people.

The chairperson and deputy chairperson roles will be filled by people with disabilities.

In calling for applicants, Ms Blandthorp paid tribute to the council members they would replace.

“I give my thanks to the outgoing councillors, for their advocacy, engagement and tireless work helping make our state more accessible and inclusive,” she said.

Victorian Disability Advisory Council Chair Chris Varney said anyone committed to making Victoria a more accessible and inclusive community should apply to join.

“The council influences policy across the entire government – it’s the chance to create real change,” Mr Varney said.

Council members will serve for a three-year term that starts on July 31, 2025.

Applications close on Saturday, April 12.
