Footscray Plaza reopening: More in store

The new Footscray Plaza will be officially opened on Saturday after more than a year under wraps.

Long-time tenants Kmart and Coles have returned to the plaza in new stores and are joined by new retailers Bakers Delight, Priceline Pharmacy and Liquorland.

The 3300-square-metre Coles store reopened last Wednesday. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the plaza would be a catalyst for further rejuvenation in Footscray, creating new jobs and bringing in more people.

“There will be increased trading and more people residing in inner Footscray, so the area around here will be activated, greatly improving safety at night,” he said.

Western Bulldogs legend Doug Hawkins and Cr Miles will open the multimillion-dollar plaza redevelopment at 11am on Saturday, lighting up Victoria’s largest LED-programmed steel light sculpture.

The artwork, by Melbourne artist Matthew Harding, will adorn the facade of the new No.18 Albert residential development above the plaza.

The 240-square-metre artwork will be programmed to change throughout the year and mark special events such as New Year’s Eve.
