Open sailing

Williamstown Sailing Club is inviting members and visitors to celebrate the official opening of the sailing season at the club at 1pm on October 11, before watching a sail-past.

Prom night

Glenn Shorrock, of Little River Band fame, is a special guest for the Last Night of the Proms in Williamstown on October 11 from 7.30pm. Modelled on the famous Last Night of the Proms held annually in London, the concert also features popular music from stage and screen, the ‘traditional series’ of British patriotic pieces, Western Region Concert Band, SingWest and Rosa McCarty. The audience can join in by dressing up, waving flags and singing along. Tickets are $42.50/$37.50 concession and groups of 10 or more.

Gone fishing

Footscray actor Christopher Bunworth will be making a splash these school holidays in Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Marlin. Played in a boat on a sea of foam, the captivating new work explores the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren and themes of grief, redemption and victory. At Southbank Theatre The Lawler until October 11. Suitable for ages 8-plus; tickets from $22.

Our welcoming west

The Plough Hotel and food blog Consider The Sauce will hold a fundraiser for West Welcome Wagon from 7-9pm on Tuesday, October 7. The WWW volunteer group helps asylum-seekers in the western suburbs. Cost $30.

Dust exhibition

A one-week exhibition by Davia McMillan, Dust, will be launched at Altona’s Joel Gallery at 7pm on Friday. As part of the exhibition, which explores the idea of having it all and looking good, a creative life drawing workshop will be held on October 7 from 7-9pm. Booking for the workshop is required.

Ageing creatively

Creatively Ageing brings together some of the artwork from the diverse and unique artists in four local residential care homes, challenging ideas about ageing and creativity. The exhibition is part of the Creatively Ageing Project, a collaboration of Footscray Community Arts Centre, ArtWard and Victoria University, which explores models of creative workshops for older people, prioritising their voices and stories.
The free exhibition opens at the FCAC Gabriel Gallery, 6pm, Thursday. Closes November 2.

Spring into summer

With summer just around the corner, check out Maribyrnong City Council’s latest Active Maribyrnong program. Registrations are now open for Spring into Summer, a new series of 12, free, six-week programs including yoga, tai chi, Pilates, cycling and self-defence. Registration is essential and places are limited.
