Free weekend travel boosts patronage on Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel

Since the opening of the Metro Tunnel on 30 November, Victorians have taken advantage of free weekend travel, with over 13 million free trips across trains, buses, and trams.

The free travel, which will run until February 1, has seen an average of over 2 million trips per weekend, a 23% increase compared to the same period last year. This has saved Victorians an estimated $17 million in fares so far.

“Free weekend travel has already helped millions of Victorians get out and about this summer – exploring new Metro Tunnel stations, seeing family and friends, and enjoying everything our city has to offer,” said Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams.

In addition to the free travel, the Metro Tunnel project is also offering a range of summer activities and entertainment for families until January 25. This includes a scavenger hunt across the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines, with Metro Tunnel merchandise and prizes up for grabs.

“We’re encouraging more Victorians and visitors to come explore our new Metro Tunnel stations, enjoy the summer activities and experience the biggest upgrade of Melbourne’s train network since the City Loop,” added Ms Williams.

The Metro Tunnel project has also added over 240 extra services per week along the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury corridor, stopping at the five new stations. From February 1, the Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines will run exclusively through the tunnels, delivering “turn-up-and-go” services across the new stations.
