Little athletics: Altona young guns best in the west by some distance

Altona Little Athletics Centre has dominated over the middle distances at the Victorian Little Athletics cross-country championships.

Altona can lay claim to be the go-to centre for young middle-distance athletes as the stand-out club in the west.

“I was so proud of all the kids,” team manager Simon Hussey said.

“They did an incredible job and I look forward to coming back next year with a bigger team.”

Altona headed to a fast course at Bundoora Park with the aim of continuing the success of previous years.

Matthew Hussey defended his under-13 boys title with a gold medal and combined with Chris Covelli (15th) and Angus Cameron (18th) to win the teams event.

In a high-quality field of 40 runners, the Altona trio ran superbly to go one better on last year’s silver medal.

On top of the success for the more experienced boys, the future looks promising for the Altona centre, with young Oliver Anthony finishing sixth in big field of 73 in the under-7 boys.

Other creditable performances included those of Emma Hussey (under-7), Ethan Reilly (under-9), James Mackrell, James Anthony (under-10), Cheyenne Mallia, Nathan Boicos, Ben Hussey (under-11), Janae Mackrell (under-12) and Joshua Johnson (under-14).

Hussey says the club is always looking to grow.
