Gridiron

The Western Foxes women’s and Western Crusaders juniors are on the lookout for players for the 2014 season. Both teams head into the upcoming Gridiron Victoria season as defending champions. The Foxes, the first-ever, full-kit women’s gridiron team in Victoria, went undefeated through the 2013 season to claim the Women’s Vic Bowl title. The Junior Crusaders lost just one game for the year to take the Junior Vic Bowl. Two of the club’s juniors recently moved to the US to play for a high school in Utah. The club is looking for players of all abilities, shapes and sizes, and all fitness levels to round out player rosters. The season starts in early October. The teams train at Henry Turner Reserve in Footscray. The Foxes train Wednesdays from 6.30pm and Sundays from 10am, while the Junior Crusaders train on Wednesdays from 5pm.

Lacrosse

Williamstown stretched its lead at the top of Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league to five games after a 14-3 win over Chadstone. Williamstown’s Josh Ardossi scored five goals and international Ben Newman managed a hat-trick on his return to the team. Footscray kept alive its chances of stealing second spot and a finals double chance with a nail-biting 9-8 win over Caulfield. Jack Mooney led the way with five goals. In the women’s state league, Newport claimed local bragging rights over Williamstown in an 18-7 drubbing, inspired by six goals apiece to Rachel Kirchheimer and Hayley Sofarnos. Footscray is still the top dog after a 14-1 mauling of Caulfield.

Taekwondo

Two City West Taekwondo rising stars will be reaching for gold when they head to Sydney this week to compete at the sixth annual Oceania taekwondo

championships. Matthew Farrell and Bailey Lewis secured positions on the Australian taekwondo team after a successful competition at a team selections meeting in Perth in April. Farrell will be competing in the ‘head contact cadet division’ for 12-14 year olds, while Lewis will compete in the ‘head contact junior division’ for 15-17 year olds.

Life saving

Williamstown has made a splash in the
opening round of the Victorian Junior Pool Lifesaving competition with an impressive 289 points. After placing second behind Jan Juc last season, Life Saving Victoria junior co-ordinator Luke Gavin said it appeared Williamstown members had worked hard to refine their lifesaving skills in a bid to get back to the top. “Williamstown has a strong team, which has continued to shine each year at the pool competitions,” he said.
