Hobsons Bay council calls for feedback over residential zones

Hobsons Bay council is calling for feedback about appropriate locations for new residential zones.

Under changes that came in to effect on June 13, the state government has combined residential zones one and two into a general residential zone, carrying across existing controls and protections from the previous residential one zone.

Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said each municipality was approaching the implementation of the new residential zones differently.

“Hobsons Bay City council will be listening to the views in the community, looking at our housing needs and understanding neighbourhood identity to ensure we get the right balance between encouraging growth while maintaining local character,” she said.

Residents are being invited to “drop-in” sessions next month to have their say on desired building types, front fencing and materials, and how retail strips should be developed.

The council is also calling for feedback to help develop a structure plan for Newport. Newport residents who have already provided feedback say they want more restaurants, cafes, affordable housing, walking and cycling tracks, and better links between two sides of the train tracks.

Other suggestions included a ferry to the city, more green space and the retention of Newport’s village feel.
