VFL: Seagulls back on double-chance track with late charge against Lions

Williamstown is back into the Victorian Football League top four after a gutsy 11-point win over the Coburg Lions at Piranha Park on Sunday.

The Seagulls kicked five of the last seven goals to record their third straight win.

A red-hot Dylan Conway booted three goals to make it 12 in three games since his promotion to the seniors.

Peter Faulks was the best of the Seagulls’ key position players, while Adam Marcon, Ben Davies and Kane Lambert saw plenty of the ball.

With byes either side of round 14, it was a must-win game for the Seagulls if they are to remain in the hunt for the double-chance riches of a top-four finish.

They will head into Tuesday night’s Foxtel Cup grand final against West Perth at Simonds Stadium in Geelong in peak form as they aim to take out the title for the second time in its four-year history.

Footscray’s time at the top of the VFL ladder was short-lived – it was mown down by a fast-finishing Box Hill at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday.

Clay Smith was best for the Bulldogs, topping off a quality game in the midfield with three goals, while seasoned campaigners Brett Goodes and Shaun Higgins pressed for a return to the AFL side.

The Bulldogs will be back at the kennel on Sunday, hosting Essendon in a game that will start at noon so fans of the red, white and blue can get to Etihad Stadium in time for the twilight AFL game starting at 4.40pm.
