Drivers owing more than $65,000 in unpaid fines were caught in a joint operation by the Sheriff’s Office and police at Maribyrnong’s Highpoint shopping centre last week.
Eight cars were clamped by owners who could not pay their fines on the spot.
More than 3200 cars were checked between 9.30am and 3pm using numberplate recognition technology.
Sergeant Mark Robertson, of the north-west divisional response unit, said about 40 police and sheriff’s officers were involved.
“They targeted unpaid fines, disqualified drivers, unlicensed drivers, unregistered vehicles . . . 195 sheriff’s warrants were executed with 46 people of interest detected and more than $65,000 recovered. Eight cars were clamped because the drivers haven’t or can’t pay so their cars will be clamped until they do.
“Some are awaiting court orders as well. Victoria Police issued 14 penalty notices and one person was charged on summons for driving matters.”
Sergeant Robertson said errant drivers were detected from across Melbourne’s west and said the operation would be ongoing at changing locations.
“We vary where we target motorists, so it’s just random spots,” he said.
“We might go back there again. It’s quite a good spot because of the flow of traffic through that area.”
