■ Last Saturday the 88.9 WYN FM caravan made its debut at Soldiers Reserve for the WRFL match of the day between Werribee Districts and Spotswood. Everything I love about local footy was on display, including cars parked around the ground and about 1000 spectators with team colours proudly displayed. There were kids playing on the swings and slides, people on the ground having a kick in the breaks, the smell of sausages cooking and good-natured banter between supporters. And there was the game. It was a great contest from start to finish. There were people who questioned whether Werribee Districts should come straight into WRFL division 1, and that was fair enough. Now the team is second on the ladder, six points clear of third. It is a good side that is well coached and has good facilities and behind-the-scenes support. The radio caravan’s first visit to Soldiers won’t be the last.
■ Braybrook Football Club will celebrate its 140th year on Sunday, June 15, at its home at Pennell Reserve in Braybrook. The Brooker have a proud and rich history. Actually rich might not be applicable, but proud certainly is. They have four players in the Bulldogs Team of the Century, and boast more than 50 players who have gone on to play VFLAFL footy. Anniversary details: Contact Suellen at or call Frank Smith on 0415 032 075.
■ Williamstown CYMS Amateurs will hold their past players day and premiership reunions on Saturday, August 3, at Ferron Reserve. Bernie Tuck is the man with all the details – 0422 700 057 or . Werribee Masters Football Club will hold its ladies’ day in conjunction with the past players day on Sunday, June 15, from 1.30pm at Wyndhamvale North Reserve.
■ The greatest rivalry in local football is on again this weekend when Werribee travels to Point Gellibrand to take on the Seagulls. They sit third and fourth on the VFL ladder, so it will be a fair-dinkum contest between two in-form sides. The rivalry is not hype – it goes from the presidents down. This is the only home-and-away game between the sides this season. That’s a pity and something I know both clubs are keen to see addressed.
