Altona, Newport teachers’ ways refined with training in Houston

Two teachers from Altona and Newport last week departed for a week of intensive maths and science training at the Mickelson Teachers Academy in Houston, Texas.

Newport Gardens Primary School grade 3 teacher Amanda Morgan and Bayside College grade 4/5 teacher Darren Sutcliffe have made the trip as their prize for winning ExxonMobil’s Bright Future Education Award.

Altona’s Mobil refinery manager Andrew Warrell said the academy training helped teachers learn how to get students interested in maths and science.

“The teachers come back from the academy energised and full of ideas about how to engage and excite students in maths and science,” he said.

It is the sixth year the Altona plant has presented the award to teachers from schools near the refinery.

Mobil pays for the teacher’s academy tuition, accommodation and return flights.
