Bayside College student Jake Wilkinson was chuffed last week to check out his winning photograph emblazoned on a flag at Altona Meadows Skate Park.
His photograph, dubbed Riding is Timeless, won the creative expression category of Hobsons Bay’s fourth annual Pixel8 competition.
The competition, started by Victoria Police, is aimed at promoting positive images of the city’s young people who enjoy art and culture.
Emmanuel College student Khoi Nguyen won the community harmony category with a work titled Anzac Day Tribute, while Williamstown High School’s Emilia McSherry won the community well-being category with a photo of two friends at Williamstown Beach titled Joy.
Winners and runners-up will have their work displayed at the skate park this month.
Winning photographs will then be displayed at local police stations, the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre and Altona Gate shopping centre.
Hobsons Bay police’s Inspector Richard Paterson said the competition brought young people closer to their surroundings.
“I see Pixel8 as an excellent opportunity for young people in Hobsons Bay to view their community through a camera lens and gain an appreciation of the great place where we live and work,” he said. “This year’s entrants have done a terrific job … now we can share their photos and keep them as a record forever.”
Runners-up were Amy Venema of Laverton P-12 College (community harmony), Ana Mihajlovic of Williamstown High School
(community well-being) and Kaleisha Crundall of Williamstown High School (creative expression). Williamstown High School received $500 for having the most entrants.
