VNL: City West Falcon into decider after thrashing Boroondara Genesis

City West Falcons are into the Victorian Netball League grand final after smashing Boroondara Genesis by 16 goals last week.

After winning all 18 of their regular-season matches, the Falcons made a shaky start to the major semi-final and went into the quarter-time break trailing by four goals.

But as they have been able to do all season, the Falcons came out with all guns blazing in the second term.

They scored 15 goals for the quarter to turn the deficit into a two-goal half-time lead.

From there, the Falcons added an impressive 33 goals in the second half to take a 58-42 win.

The shooting combination of Kath Knott and Alice Teague-Neeld continued to produce the goods, the pair combining for 51 of City West’s goals.

Julia Woolley chipped in with seven of her own to complete the strong attack.

For Boroondara, Emma Ryde-Coad was the leading scorer, with 26 from 31 shots.

The Falcons will enjoy a week off while the Genesis players will seek to rebound when they meet the Southern Saints in the preliminary final.

The grand final will be played at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on July 2.

The good news didn’t stop there for City West.

The club’s division 1 side also qualified for the grand final with a nine-goal win against the Southern Saints.

After leading the major semi-final by four goals at half-time, the Falcons galloped away with the match in the second half as they outscored the Saints by five goals to secure a 52-43 win.

Like their senior counterparts, the Falcons’ division 1 side goes straight into the grand final.

Its opponent will be decided this week when the Southern Saints and Geelong Cougars meet in the preliminary final.
