UPDATE: Police are searching for a male intruder who stabbed a man to death in St Albans on Tuesday morning.
Brimbank police and homicide detectives were called to the Adams Street address around 4.45am after a man in his early 20s was stabbed multiple times after an altercation.
His family, who were home at the time of the attack, rushed the man to Sunshine Hospital, where he later died.
Police and SES cordoned off the area and will be processing the scene for the rest of the day.
Brimbank Inspector Chris Gilbert said while the attack was not a domestic dispute, it is believed the victim and offender were known to each other.
“We certainly are confident that it’s not something that neighbours should be concerned about here. It’s not a random attack,” Inspector Gilbert said.
“It’s a terrible attack. This is generally a safe area and neighbours will be quite rightly concerned. But we can assure them this is a safe area.”
Inspector Gilbert said police had no leads or description of the attacker, or the weapon used to inflict harm.
Neighbour Alex Zdrnja, who lives down the road from the crime scene, said the attack had unnerved him.
Mr Zdrnja said his home has been burgled 18 months ago while he was sleeping.
“I was worried (the attack was on my friends), but now I know it’s not them,” he said.
“It’s pretty shocking to hear that this has happened.
“It’s the western suburbs, what can I say. These things happen all the time. These things happen everywhere – but here, all the time.”
Investigators are keen to speak to witnesses or neighbours in the area that may have heard or seen anything suspicious.
