Back to Back Theatre: Blink, and you’ll miss it

A film project starring a wide range of people from the inner west is proving to be one out of the box.

Back to Back Theatre’s acclaimed community project The Democratic Set has returned to its Footscray Community Arts Centre birthplace as part of FCAC ’s 40th birthday celebrations.

Using a box-shaped set and a tracking camera, a director, videographer and actor work with participants on creating a 15-second video exploring their take on the theme of democracy and equality.

FCAC director and chief executive Jade Lillie says the core themes of the project form the founding principles of FCAC.

The idea first came to Back to Back Theatre artistic director Bruce Gladwin more than 25 years ago during a performance workshop.

Gladwin said the project provides a chance for anyone to take part in a creative project, regardless of their performing skill.

“We have created a work that belongs to the participants who create it,” he said.“We’ve had a baby celebrate their first birthday, an elderly Belgian woman transform her wheelchair into a pirate ship, and the mayor of Horsham perform a waltz with his wife.” FCAC will screen the completed project later this year.
