An inconsistent Altona was unable to topple Sunshine in the Western Region Football League on Saturday.
The Vikings suffered their fourth loss of the season, succumbing to the Kangaroos by 31 points.
It was a frustrating game for Altona coach Josh Russo, who was disappointed with his side’s inability to produce a four-quarter performance.
At their best, the Vikings looked capable of causing an upset, but they were unable to maintain their skills or intensity.
That was all Sunshine needed to capitalise and take its second win of the season, 16.15 (111) to 11.14 (80).
“We’re obviously disappointed,” Russo said. “You want to win and you plan to win, but sometimes you have a lapse for 10 or 15 minutes as we did today and it cost us. They’re a good side. There’s no question we stuck with them for parts of the game.”
Patrick Wiggins was outstanding for Sunshine inside the 50-metre arc, the big forward taking a number of important contested marks.
He also had his kicking boots on, finishing the match with five goals, including the sealer late in the final term.
Around the ground, Russell Douglas was a key for Sunshine, often sending the Kangaroos forward and kicking three goals.
After four straight losses, Sunshine coach Brett Jacobs was rapt to be back on the winners’ list.
“I think our boys had forgotten how to win so it was an important game,” Jacobs said. “We haven’t been able to put four quarters together and it’s ended up costing us games.”
