A developer hoping to build a seven-storey apartment block on the site of the old Boccelli restaurant in Altona has been knocked back before lodging a planning permit with Hobsons Bay council.
The developer, whose identity has not been made public, was advised by the council that a seven-storey, 28-dwelling building proposed for 118 Pier Street was “unlikely to be supported”.
The highest building in Pier Street is five storeys.

As reported by Star Weekly this month, the council and residents expressed concern about a trend towards taller multi-storey development proposals across the municipality.
Planning & Property Partners (PPP), acting for Omni Property Group, has applied to build an eight-storey, 56-dwelling development at 637 Melbourne Road, which would be Spotswood’s highest residential building.
The council has received 169 submissions relating to the eight-storey proposal.
Another application, for a six-storey, 33-dwelling development in Aitken Street, Williamstown, is also before the council.
Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the Pier Street proposal, which included ground-floor retail space, was “simply not appropriate” for the relaxed cafe and beach precinct.
“We have been told repeatedly by the community the importance of maintaining the character and village scale of Pier Street,” she said.
