Imperial youngsters lead the Westgate basketball charge

They may be young but the Westgate Imperials don’t mess around on the basketball court.

Competing in the Victorian Junior Basketball Association under-12 boys competition, the Imperials are enjoying a perfect 5-0 start to the season.

This is the first season the Westgate Basketball Association has entered teams in the league.

The Imperials are on top of the ladder in the regional north one grade, which means the side is among the top 50 under-12 teams in the state.

Westgate assistant coach Sean Seeliger was rapt with the start to the season.

“To be playing in our first ever year and be on top of the ladder in regional north is great for the boys,” he said.

“The boys have never played in this competition before and we have beaten some big clubs.”

With great results and growing playing numbers, the Westgate Basketball Association is looking to expand in coming seasons.

The WBA, which has 60 teams from seven clubs competing, is also being represented by a boys’ under-16 Imperials side.

“We would definitely be keen to go to the Big V and also looking at getting teams into the VC [Victorian Championships],” he said.

“We would be looking at hopefully getting a team into the VC within the next 18 months. That is when you’re playing off as one of the top 20 teams in the state.”
