Foxtel Cup: Seagulls book semi-final berth

By Liam Twomey

Williamstown Football Club’s impressive run of form continued last Tuesday, with the Seagulls winning their way into the Foxtel Cup semi-finals.

Taking on North East Australian Football League side Aspley at the MCG, Williamstown was too good over the four quarters, recording a 45-point win, 14.9 (93) to 7.6 (48).

After leading by just seven points at half-time, the Seagulls produced some of their best football in a dominant second half.

With Adam Marcon leading from the front around the ground and Scott Clouston controlling the forward 50, Williamstown kicked nine goals to three after the main break.

Williamstown coach Andrew Collins was impressed with his side’s performance.

“The boys are really excited about what we’re doing at the moment as a football club,” he
said.

“We made some changes to the team that played Geelong [three days earlier]. We had 12 fresh players waiting to play against Aspley and they were terrific.

“It says a lot about the whole club and the focus we have on having such a strong club culture.

“It’s a real credit to [chief executive] Brendan Curry and [football manager] Chris Dixon. They have put the squad together for the club to go stand-alone.”

Williamstown’s semi-final opponent will be the winner of tonight’s match between East Perth and Norwood at Perth’s Patersons Stadium. The semi-final will be played on Tuesday, July 1.

Williamstown will enjoy a week off from VFL competition with state league representative football on this weekend.

Nine of the club’s players have been named in the Victorian squad to take on the South Australian National Football League at North Port Oval from 1pm this Saturday.

Williamstown players Marcon, Clouston, Anthony Anastasio, Cam Lockwood, Nick Meese, Mitch Banner, Peter Faulks, Ben Davies and Ben Jolley are in the Victorian side coached by Damian Carroll.

With his side fourth on the VFL ladder ahead of the break, Collins says he’s been impressed with the start to the season.

“We were disappointed about the loss to the Northern Blues, but we’re really excited to have five wins – and five good wins against quality opposition.”
