WRFL: West Footscray bloods new players in 123-point walkover

West Footscray started its season with an easy win against Braybrook in Western Region Football League’s division 2 on Saturday.

The Roosters got off to a flier at Pennell Reserve, kicking eight goals to one in the first quarter to set up their 26.28 (184) to 9.7 (61) win.

Coach Trevor Davies said the 123-point margin was unexpected following the arrival of a number of new players during the off-season.

“We played very well together with a lot of blokes in their first games together; we had 14 new players.

“We won the ball well out of the middle and around the ground, and gave the first opportunity to our forwards.”

Davies said that after a slow start the Bombers worked their way back. “They tightened up and beat us in the middle in the second and third quarters. Our ability to change up in the middle in the last quarter was good.

“I’m happy with how we ran out the game. It’s always a worry in the first round; have you have done over the preseason?”

Davies said Nathan Calleja and Mark Speakman were two of the better players in a good team effort. New recruit Damien Yze, brother of former AFL star Adem, kicked 12 goals but could have had more “if he’d kicked straight”.

This week the Roosters take on Caroline Springs, which had a 210-point win against Laverton, 36.19 (235) to 4.1 (25).

Other winners in division 2 were Glenorden, Parkside, Sunshine Heights, Tarneit and Wyndhamvale.
