WRFL: Woodsmen take control against Altona

Spotswood’s perfect start to the season continued with a win against injury-riddled Altona in Western Region Football League’s division 1 on Saturday.

Despite the Vikings having the wood over their opposition in recent years, it was the Woodsmen who kicked away after quarter time for a 21.17 (143) to 9.8 (62) victory at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

Spotswood coach Tom Langlands was gratified with a win against the Vikings in his side’s first home game of the season. “They started really well and were in the contest,” he said. “We got some bigger bodies around the ball and that helped us take control.

“We were really pleased to win the ball first and give our forwards first crack at it.”

Langlands thought David Iaccarino and James Beha to be his better players, along with Matson Lynch on the back line.

Vikings coach Josh Russo said the final margin was a lot bigger than the contest warranted.

“It was a really tight tussle in the first quarter,” he said.

“Spotswood picked up a little bit and we lost some players with injuries in the second term. We did have a few lapses around the ground but didn’t give up all day. Our pressure around the ground was a positive.

“We’re disappointed with the result but happy with how we went about it.”

Russo said Nathan Leslie’s role on former AFL player Jason Cloke was a positive, as were the games of Josh Rafferty and Brett Shiels.

He said the week’s break over Easter was timely for his side, which came out of the game with four injuries.

Also in division 1, Port Melbourne defeated Yarraville Seddon 16.13 (109) to 8.12 (60).
