World-class badminton arrives in Maribyrnong next week in the form of the 2014 Victor Maribyrnong international series tournament.
The four-day competition at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy from April 23 and open to all 180 Badminton World Federation-affiliated countries, is considered a crucial lead-up event to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July.
The competition includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
Among those taking part will be Australian national squad players Renuga Veeran and Gronya Somerville, pictured with Maribyrnong councillor Cameron McDonald.
Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the council was proud to be hosting another international sports event.
“We have first-class sporting facilities,” he said. “Along with our proximity to the CBD and the airport, we’re continuing to attract great sport events here in the city of Maribyrnong. Badminton is an all-inclusive sport for all ages, levels and cultural back- grounds. It’s great fun to play and watch.”
