WRFL: North Footscray Devils enjoy that winning feeling

The North Footscray seniors are back on the wining list for the first time since 2012 in the Western Region Football League.

After losing every encounter in division 1 last year, it took only two games in division 2 for the Devils to get a win on the board, defeating Braybrook 19.12 (126) to 12.8 (80) at Hansen Reserve.

New co-coach Matthew Walsh said there was a good feeling at the club on Saturday night.

“It’s been a long time coming as we haven’t won a game in 18 months,” he said.

“Some of the guys have been playing here for two years and have never sung the song.”

Walsh said that despite early injuries that limited rotations, the players had the belief they could win.

“We started well early and then they would peg a couple of goals back.

“With the injuries, we had no bench for the second half … Lachie Liddicoat had to ruck for the whole second half.

“We were two goals up at three-quarter-time … to run away with it in the last term was really good.”

Kieran Murphy was best on ground, with David Clonan and Tyson Wills among the better players.

Walsh said the Easter break came at the perfect time following injuries to four players, including Andre Lakkis and Jac Manuell.

“They should be OK for the game against Caroline Springs in two weeks,” he said. “We have a tough couple of matches ahead.”

In other division 2 games, West Footscray remains undefeated after beating Caroline Springs 16.17 (113) to 12.12 (84), while Parkside easily accounted for Sanctuary Lakes 15.14 (104) to 4.9 (33).
