Hobsons Bay council last week voted to put a heritage overlay on St Stephens Uniting Church in Williamstown.
The 130-year-old church building and adjacent hall were saved after a parishioner threatened legal action to stop the sale of the building by Synod to recoup a multimillion-dollar debt incurred by the collapse of Acacia College at Mernda.
