EXHIBITIONS

Reflections, an exhibition of drawings, paintings, images and abstracts by Stuart Hames, will be launched at Altona’s Joel Gallery at 7pm on May 2. An exhibition by five local women, titled Lasting Impressions 2014, will be launched at 7pm on May 16. The gallery is at 5 Sargood Street, Altona.

HIGH MARK

It was ideal weather for the grand final of Hobsons Bay’s skate/BMX/scooter competition at Newport Skate Park last week. Jesse Abrahams, 15, was among those showing off their moves. Flags will be raised at Altona Meadows Skate Park tomorrow as part of a public art project featuring artists from Laverton’s Wood Street Arts Space.

NEW GIGS

Bluegrass, honkytonk and western swing from The ReChords and Nigel Wearne hit Melbourne’s newest western suburbs venue, the Bar of Bengal, on Sunday, May 4. The new venue at Kindred Studios, 212a Whitehall Street, Yarraville, is setting up for a string of Sunday afternoon live gigs programmed especially for inner-west audiences.

MAY DAY PICNIC

Inspired by the meatworkers ‘butchers’ picnic’ and celebrating the relationship between industry and art, Footscray Community
Arts Centre is hosting a free picnic this May Day weekend. It will
feature Snuff Puppets, Massive Hip Hop Choir, The Riverside Metalworker blacksmiths, Mobile Radio, The Melbourne Rapid Response Theatre Team and The Hackketts, and there will be a Union shop barbecue, meat raffle, and public soapbox.

■ The free picnic is from noon-4pm on Sunday, May 4, on the FCAC Riverside Lawn and Amphitheatre.
