Graham Carlson hangs on for Turner Memorial

Brave breakaways dominated the Footscray Cycling Club’s Eric Turner Memorial Championship at Drake Boulevard in Altona on Saturday.

The feature race was full of surprises, with past club champion Graham Carlson making the most of a full race breakaway to claim his first championship in years.

The Humevale mechanic was part of a strong breakaway that included the in-form Miles Da Costa, returning from injury, Anthony Garnier, veteran Ben O’Leary and sprinter Adrian Hanson.

Da Costa and the red-hot Dom Dudkiewicz tried to get a short breakaway happening soon after a second break formed and immediately set about working to build a lead.

Carlson said each rider did his bit and didn’t shirk the responsibility.

“The guys were great today, they all worked so hard,” he said. “Drake Boulevard is a great circuit and it was what brought me back.”

The last lap saw the breakaway inevitably break apart, with Carlson crossing the line clear of Da Costa in second and Garnier third.

Other winners on the day were Brendan Quigley (B grade), Johann Birk (C grade) and Dennis Tito (D grade).
