Laverton warehouse job is your chance to give back

Nurije Alexander is a volunteer at the Cancer Council Victoria (CCV) Laverton warehouse.

But recruiting volunteers has not been easy since the merchandise warehouse relocated from the city.

Ms Alexander, 56, who also volunteers for Pink Ribbon and Daffodil Day, says she finds volunteering rewarding.

“I’ve had a couple of family members who have had different forms of cancer and passed on,” she said.

“I thought this is a way to give back to the community and all the good work that the Cancer Council does.

“My sister-in-law and brother-in-law both passed away from stomach cancer.

“And my sister passed away from leukaemia.”

On Mondays, Ms Alexander is the only volunteer in the warehouse.

“I know we’re finding it very hard to get volunteers out there because it is at Laverton,” she said.

“When we were in the city, it was easy to get volunteers, but once we moved out to Laverton, it’s harder to get them.”

The warehouse houses merchandise for CCV’s online store and fund-raising campaigns, including Relay for Life and Daffodil Day.

Head of fund-raising Deborah Stringer says the organisation has lost many volunteers following the move from central Melbourne.

“We require up to five volunteers a day to help with packing of orders and handling outgoing stock, counting stock for various events, completing general computer tasks and supporting corporate volunteers who assist us in the logistics area,” she said.
