WDCA cricket

West Newport has won its way to the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A turf grand final for the fourth time in five years. The Lions will be gunning for a third premiership in that time when they lock horns with Grand United in a four-day decider starting on Saturday. They caused a major boilover in beating much-fancied minor premiers Williamstown Colts by 74 runs in a semi-final at Greenwich Reserve. Skipper Trent Jones was man of the match for the Lions with 60 and 4-38.

VNL netball

City West Falcons have collected their fifth win on the trot to retain top spot on the Victorian Netball League championship division ladder. The Falcons’ offence showed no signs of slowing down in a 60-41 mauling of the Geelong Cougars at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Three goalers were deployed by Falcons coach Marg Lind and all three had better than 85 per cent returns. VU-Western Lightning lost to the Boroondara Genesis, the only other undefeated team. While the Lightning went down 44-40, they showed they can match it with one of the best sides in the competition.

Premier Cricket

Footscray Edgewater had to settle for a second place in Victorian Premier Cricket after suffering a 70-run beating from
St Kilda in the top-of-the-table clash at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. Defending a modest total of 153, the Bulldogs had no answer to Saints opener Thomas Moffat, who made a patient 123 not out off 255 balls to lead his side to 5-223. The Bulldogs have a finals series to look forward to in Steve Chapman’s first season in charge. They host Carlton in a two-day quarter-final at the Merv Hughes Oval
this weekend with play on Saturday and Sunday beginning at the earlier time of 10.30am.
