Student dreams in full flight at Victorian University

A new multi-storey mural gracing Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus is aimed at inspiring “crazy dreams” among students.

Unveiled last Tuesday, the latest artwork by renowned Footscray street artist Baby Guerrilla soars across a prominent building facing Ballarat Road.

She said the paste-up project would never have made it off the ground without VU’s “courage and vision”.

“It takes courage to support crazy dreams like this and that’s something I believe we need more of from both politics and institutions. I believe that no matter what we are or what we do, we can leave a positive mark on this world. My hope is that this artwork achieves its intentions of encouraging others in their dreams of flight.”

VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins (pictured with Baby Guerrilla and the artwork) praised the mural for capturing the spirit of education, opportunity and ambition.

“It also depicts a woman who perhaps represents one of the many cultures and countries that make up Australia’s vibrant multicultural mix,” he said.

“As one of Australia’s most culturally diverse universities, we celebrate our own diversity of students and staff.”

Professor Dawkins said the work helps tie the campus to the cultural landscape of Melbourne’s west. “We want to provide more opportunities like this one and support artists like Baby Guerrilla who capture our eyes and our minds in public spaces.”

Baby Guerrilla has previously completed large-scale works on The Substation in Newport and in Footscray’s Maddern Square.
