Save Newport Library last week held its first meeting to plan the next phase of its campaign against Hobsons Bay council’s proposal for a library with no books.
Former librarian Sarah Vincent is convener of the group, which has received more than 350 ‘likes’ on its Facebook page.
As reported by the Weekly on March 5, the council deferred approving plans for the Newport Youth Library and Seniors Project after residents complained the design showed no bookshelves.
Mayor Sandra Wilson had said the library would complement Altona North and Williamstown libraries by providing “services based on e-book, digital information and learning”.
But following a public outcry, the council unanimously voted to consult the community. It has invited residents to an information session on April 2 at 6pm to discuss the future of Newport library.
The meeting will be at Newport Seniors Centre at Paine Reserve in Mason Street.
People may nominate to become a member of the library sub-committee that will guide development of the new library. Nominations close on April 2.
