200 units approved for 501 Receptions site

The green light has been given for almost 200 units on the site of Footscray’s iconic 501 Receptions.

FSG Corp Australia’s $30 million proposal for 495-507 Barkly Street includes twin four-storey blocks housing the units, along with eight retail ground-floor tenancies.

Maribyrnong council approved the plans despite a shortfall of almost 60 car spaces, citing the location’s proximity to transport and allocation of car-share parking.

The council is also seeking at least 10 three-bedroom apartments in the development. The 6288-square-metre site was rezoned from industrial to mixed-use in 2009 and approved in 2010 for 111 units.

But FSG Corp Australia sought to almost double the number of units and decrease their size “to respond to the current market demands”.

An officer’s report to a recent council meeting on city development recommended approval because the height and layout of the proposal were similar to the project already approved in 2010.

The proposal attracted four objections, citing concerns about traffic, noise, overshadowing, overlooking and the reduction in carparking requirements.

The developer reportedly paid $8.4 million last year for the site, home to 501 Receptions since 1980.
