Click away for Stony Creek photo competition

Shutterbugs are being urged to capture the life and times of Yarraville’s Stony Creek.

Friends of Stony Creek president Steve Wilson (pictured) said a photographic competition the group was holding was a perfect chance for people to discover a gem in their own backyard.

“We’re hoping to try to get people interested in the creek area,” he said. “It’s amazing how many people don’t even know it’s there.”

The Yarraville resident said the competition aimed to reflect both the environment and the public use of the creek. The idea came to him while exploring the collection of photos held by Footscray Historical Society.

“Usually these are of family – not many of homes and the environment,” he said. “I thought, let’s get a record of Stony Creek.”

Mr Wilson said he had seen a dramatic improvement in the health of the creek since he joined the fledgling group in 1992.

The Stony Creek Photographic Competition will be judged in three age categories – under 16, 17-50 and over 50. Up to five photos can be submitted at A4 size with title and details of the photograph and photographer.

Send entries to Friends of Stony Creek, 35 Severn Street, Yarraville 3013 by September 31. They will be exhibited at Footscray Historical Society from October 11-17. Winners will be named on October 17, with the prize of a course at Footscray Community Arts Centre valued up to $500.

Friends of Stony Creek’s next planting day will be in West Footscray from 10am-noon this Sunday, between Cala Street and Paramount Road.
