A showcase for fine designs

A stylish living space can be what sets one house or apartment apart from another. Melbourne designer Ian Lyell of Ian Lyell Design, based in Spotswood, specialises in making people’s indoor and outdoor spaces pop, no matter how much room they have.

“I have 30 years’ experience in garden design, including plant and product knowledge to ensure my clients make the right choice for their outdoor space,” Ian says. “I specialise in designing and sourcing a range of exclusive and original décor pieces for the discerning market and bringing small spaces such as balconies, terraces, decks and courtyards to life.”

For inner-city dwellers, making the most of what’s available indoors and out is crucial.

“When designing or styling a balcony, for example, there are two concepts that work well – minimalism, where the focus is on one hero pot or sculpture with structured plantings in a corner with minimal furnishings; and gardenesque – clusters of pots with a variety of plants set around balcony furniture,” Ian says.

“It’s important to frame any view. Adding greenery to a balcony will make distant trees in the landscape feel part of a private garden that extends for miles”

Home owners looking to jazz up their indoor and outdoor spaces will find plenty of inspiration at Ian’s Spotswood warehouse, which has a range of select sculptures, terracotta pots from Tuscany, Oriental pieces, handmade vases, outdoor furniture and bespoke designs made by the designer himself.

“Clients are welcome to book a consultation with us to help develop their interior and exterior spaces,” Ian says. “The design is carefully considered after establishing a design brief. Then the final selection of furnishings are chosen to best suit the client and create their ultimate lifestyle space.”

Ian spent his early years pursuing horticulture, landscape design and his passion in various art forms. This knowledge and talent continues to expand though his company, working with artisans from around the world to realise new models and designs.
