Baseball
Footscray was eliminated from Baseball Victoria’s summer league women’s division 1 finals after an 11-1 thrashing from minor premiers Essendon in the semi-final at Boeing Reserve on Saturday. In division 1, Williamstown Wolves claimed a big 14-5 road win over Upwey-Ferntree Gully, but the Newport Rams were battered 12-2 by Cheltenham. In division 3, Footscray made light work of cellar-dweller Carrum Downs in a 9-5 win.
Cricket
English import Harry Finch has left Yarraville a parting gift: his starring role in its crucial 19-run win over Coburg in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association on Sunday. Finch made 100 not out, his third century of the summer, and was part of a game-breaking 100-run fourth wicket stand with David Wolfe (57), which clinched victory, boosting the Eagles’ finals chances. Williamstown remains in the finals hunt after upsetting Melton by 31 runs, but Altona’s grip on its top-six spot loosened with a 57-run loss to Werribee.
Gridiron
Western Crusaders will again be part of Gridiron Victoria’s division 1 competition this year. Week one will see the Crusaders face South Eastern Predators at Ranger Field in Croydon on May 2. The Vic Bowl XXXI is scheduled for August 15.
