Yarraville pop-up park backed

More than 1500 people have signed a new petition supporting a pop-up park in Yarraville.

The petition, presented to last week’s Maribyrnong council
meeting, is calling for a permanent park space to be created on Ballarat
Street at the site of a pop-up park trialled last year.

A response to the 1562-signature petition will be included in a
report to be provided to the council about future pop-up park plans
across Maribyrnong.

The Weekly,
on June 20 last year, reported that a permanent “pop-up park” in
Yarraville was a step closer with a petition of more than 1900
signatures presented to the council. The park was closed in May. Mayor
Catherine Cumming has said it is a place for the community to come
together and enjoy an urban space in a new way.

Last week’s petition comes as the council considers rolling out
the pop-up park concept trialled in Yarraville at a cost of $190,000
over the past two years to other suburbs, including Footscray, West
Footscray and Maribyrnong.

The council last month received two separate petitions related to
the Yarraville pop-up park – one with 30 signatories in favour, another
with 23 signatories against.

A survey in April last year found 56 per cent of Yarraville traders were happy with the project and 24 per cent unhappy.

A new survey of Yarraville traders is being undertaken by the council in light of the conflict over the initiative.

The survey is seeking feedback on whether a temporary or permanent
park may return and whether new roaming locations elsewhere in
Yarraville may be considered.
