VAFA: Stars missing, but CYs still woeful

WILLIAMSTOWN CYMS had its limited resources picked apart by a hungrier Ormond in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 1 at EE Gunn Reserve on Saturday.

The CYs were missing seven of their regular starting 18 and their depth was severely tested in a 96-point loss.

CYs coach Mathew Montebello said that personnel headaches were only part of his side’s problems at the weekend.

“I don’t want to make excuses for it because I thought our efforts weren’t up to scratch regardless of that.

“Ormond were more aggressive, more assertive and they ran harder. We didn’t turn up to play.”

The dismantlement of the CYs was a shock. They were the ones who served up floggings to Ormond in a preseason meeting and a game earlier in the season. They were sitting pretty in second position.

But minus Finlay Adamson and Josh Vanderloo, both returning via the twos, and big name players Jason Bencich, Nic Holdsworth, Craig Taylor, Darcy Weston and Callum Richards, they were uncompetitive.

“Our efforts weren’t really good enough,” Montebello said.

“They [Ormond] really supported each other, which is what we didn’t do.’’

Steven Puhar, in the ruck, and captain Ben Gray, across half forward and on the ball, were the stand-outs for CYs.

Youngsters Ash Heaver, Tim Murphy and Jake Mackenzie were other shining lights. “[Heaver] was the youngest bloke out there and he was prepared to take the game on every single time he got the ball,” Montebello said.
