Electorate change for Tarneit, Altona

UNDER the proposed boundary overhaul, changes will be made to the seats of Altona and Tarneit, which are held by Labor MPs Jill Hennessy and Tim Pallas respectively.

Altona, the state’s second-largest seat, will be reduced, losing Williams Landing, Truganina, Laverton North and Hoppers Crossing.

Point Cook will remain in the electorate.  It will be joined by the new suburb of Point Cook West, which is being built between Hacketts Road and the Princes Freeway.

Tarneit will be adjusted to cover the northern half of the Wyndham council area, taking in Truganina, Williams Landing, Laverton North, Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing.

Ms Hennessy said she understood the need for changes proposed by Electoral Boundaries Commission, but urged it to ensure they were correct to stop Wyndham residents from being disadvantaged.

“My experience is that seat boundaries are never perfect. I certainly hope the [EBC] have got their figures right when it comes to projected growth.

“Our communities live the consequences of underestimating population growth on a daily basis.”

A new seat will be created in Werribee if changes to boundaries are approved. Monash University lecturer Nick Economou said the redistribution would benefit the Labor party.

He said the changes would have a significant impact because they were long overdue.
