VFL: Seagulls beat league leaders Box Hill

WILLIAMSTOWN toppled ladder-leaders Box Hill by 25 points in the Victorian Football League on Sunday.

So tight is the competition in the VFL this year, the loss dropped Box Hill from top spot to fourth and bumped the Seagulls from fourth to third. Casey is first, just ahead of Geelong.

It was only the fourth time this season Box Hill has played at home, but it was jumped by Williamstown from the outset.

The Seagulls dominated with 13 scoring shots in the opening term, kicking 7.6 and taking a 29-point lead into the first break.

The Hawks kicked the first two goals of the second term, but once Dylan Addison got his second, a massive score loomed for Williamstown, which slammed home another five goals to increase its lead to 35 points by half-time.

The third quarter saw the Seagulls get out to the biggest lead of the day, 47 points by three-quarter-time with Addison, Tom Campbell and Brent Prismall all got goals.

But the Hawks, missing Jonathon Ceglar, who made his senior debut with Hawthorn and Brendan Whitecross, who returned to the senior side, held the Seagulls scoreless in the final term.

But Williamstown’s defensive efforts restricted the Hawks, who could manage only three goals, falling 25 points short.

Addison finished with four for Williamstown and Lukas Markovic scored three. Ben Jolley was best on ground, with the likes of Daniel Cross, Brent Prismall, Ed Carr and ruckman Cameron Wood providing plenty for the highlights reel.

Football manager Chris Dixon said the seven-goal opening term was key to the win.

“It was important that we came out of the blocks travelling to Box Hill,” he said.

“Box Hill threw numbers behind the ball later on and it was disappointing that we let our guard down and weren’t able to win all four quarters. But to come to Box Hill and win was a great result.

“Ed Carr has taken his game to a new level this year and Prismall is finding form after a layoff with a broken cheekbone. He’s been really impressive.”
