VRL: Bulldogs break Uni resistance

FOOTSCRAY had to run a fine-tooth comb over Melbourne University’s water-tight defence to find a way to the try-line in a 12-10 win in the Victorian Rugby Union premier division on Saturday.

The Bulldogs eventually discovered the finest of cracks in the defence and got a late try from Joe Masalu for a precious victory that consolidates their place among the top three.

Bulldogs coach Junior Naufahu told the Weekly a combination of tough Uni defence and impatient ball security made for a frustrating day on the sidelines.

“Melbourne Uni came out to play and came at us pretty strong,” he said.

“We just couldn’t get any go forward. Their defence really held us up and it was tough conditions. The try came late in the game, but we’ll take the win.”

The message from Naufahu to his players at half-time was to treasure time spent in possession.

Melbourne Lesa and first half try-scorer Siosiua Ngauamo heeded the call to be the most damaging in attack.

“The whole aim was to hold on to the ball for as long as we can and let them defend to try and wear them down,” Naufahu said.

It was the Bulldogs’ fifth win in a row. The Doggies host fourth placed Moorabbin in a blockbuster at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday.
