The Maltese Association Hobsons Bay is lobbying the council for more parking. President Joe Attard says the Altona East club has about 500 financial members but literally a handful of car-parking spaces.
He said that for the past six years the council had promised to prioritise parking provision for the club.
Members are still waiting.
The club was formed in 1992 to help people suffering from depression and to encourage the elderly, disadvantaged and isolated to socialise.
Every Tuesday, members come down to play bingo or table tennis, enjoy a drink and shoot the breeze.
Some are on walking frames or in wheelchairs, accompanied by carers.
Asked where people parked, Mr Attard replied: “God knows”.
“We’ve got people with disabilities, people with frames, walking sticks, wheelchairs.”
Mr Attard said members wanted to use parkland next to the Collins Street club for parking.
“There’s nothing on it,” he said. “It’s bare. There’s not even a shrub.”
The club will make a verbal submission to the council next week in the hope of receiving funding in the next council budget.
Mayor Angela Altair said the council would consider the association’s submission as part of the 2013-14 budget process.
People lobbying for council funds have the chance to address councillors at Tuesday’s council meeting. The budget will be adopted on June 25.
