Approach bridge with caution
I was very disappointed last week to see the fluoro-coloured bicycle cut-outs along Shepherd Bridge in Footscray removed. They had been placed there by residents to highlight the very dangerous footpath that cyclists are forced to use on their journey to the city. While the bicycle cut-outs obviously didn’t physically improve the crossing, they did give me a little extra confidence to challenge the huge anxiety that verges on panic every time I cross this terrifying bridge. Let’s hope we can get this bridge crossing fixed soon. – Larissa MacFarlane, Footscray
Re: Company denies link to cancer (Weekly, May 22)
So the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal acknowledges that Innova will produce airborne carcinogens and still approves the plan. This is staggering. I’m guessing Mark Dwyer (VCAT deputy president), and members Ian Potts and Catherine Wilson don’t live anywhere near Altona. And to suggest 950 metres is a suitable buffer is simply laughable — I live in Altona and can regularly smell the filth all the way from Laverton North and Brooklyn. Hobsons Bay Council and mayor Angela Altair need to stand up and protect the residents of Altona. – S Smith
