Journey to Recognition: Relay walk gathers recognition in west

THE journey for constitutional recognition of the first Australians took its first bold step into Footscray last Sunday.

Inspired by Michael Long’s ‘The Long Walk’, the ‘Journey to Recognition’ left Federation Square on Sunday morning bound for the Northern Territory.

The epic relay across the country began on the 15th anniversary of Sorry Day and will gather support across Australia to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia’s constitution.

The first stop on the journey was Footscray’s Nicholson Street Mall, where Greens MP Colleen Hartland welcomed ‘Journey to Recognition’ walkers including former Senator Aden Ridgeway and Gathering Place chief executive Colleen Marion.

Ms Hartland said her party was committed to constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“I am a big supporter because it is an important step towards true reconciliation and this will bring communities together, local and nationwide.”

‘Journey to Recognition’ organisers say the walk is a chance for Australia to acknowledge the first chapter of our national story and forge a future together.
