IT was a historic weekend for Altona Lacrosse Club — its 50th anniversary.
The A’s got western rivals Williamstown on board to play six games from juniors right through to seniors on one big afternoon at PJ Lynch Reserve.
“We were delighted when Williamstown agreed to be part of our celebrations as the clubs have had a healthy rivalry for 50 years,” A’s playing president, Maurice Zicman, told the Weekly.
“Williamstown members were behind the push to help form the Altona Lacrosse Club.”

But Altona could not mark its big day with a victory in the men’s division 1, losing 17-11 in the clash of the two undefeated sides.
The A’s led 4-3 at quarter-time, but once Williamstown took away the lead, they kept it and built on it to run out six-goal winners in the clash of the two undefeated teams.
Scott Mackinnon had a memorable outing for the A’s, pocketing five goals.
Simon Duke got on the score sheet twice, but the A’s’ winning streak came to an end at four.
In the top-flight men’s state league, Williamstown was goal hungry in a 26-7 mauling of MCC at Greenwich Reserve.
The Fearons burst out of the gates with a scintillating 10-goal first quarter and never looked back to record their fifth consecutive win.
In-form Footscray achieved a hard-earned 11-5 win over Caulfield at Angliss Reserve. James Lawerson scored four for the Scray, while Chris Plumb netted three.
In a shock women’s state league result, ladder leader Newport was held to a 13-13 draw by bottom side Eastside at Greenwich Reserve.
Newport led by four goals at half-time but disintegrated in the second half to give Eastside a share of the points. Hayley Sofarnos and Lyndsey Paton led the way for Newport with five goals apiece.
