Hockey Victoria women: Break adds to Gulls’ gloom

ALTONA remains winless in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league after being downed 2-0 by a slick Doncaster on Saturday.

Despite missing players due to Australian representative duties, Doncaster fielded a side full of young state representatives and the Seagulls couldn’t match them.

After missing an early penalty stroke, Altona’s confidence seemed to be dented.

Missing veteran defender Carla Ruhe, young full-back Scarlett Kennedy played a stellar game in defence for the Seagulls, made even more important when her cousin, Caity Campbell, left the ground with a suspected broken arm.

Hockeyroo Danielle Schubach was superb as usual and was supported by veteran striker Steph Sarantis.

Unfortunately, the Seagulls were unable to find the back of the net and a lack of scoreboard pressure handed a cool and confident Doncaster an easy win.

“We aren’t scoring enough goals, having only slotted two in three games thus far,” Seagulls coach Marc Richardson said after the game.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Seagulls, who host Footscray in the ‘West End Riot’ on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Altona’s top men’s side played out a 2-2 draw with Doncaster.

John Camilleri scored his first top-flight goal to put the Seagulls in the lead, but Doncaster hit back to level the scores at half-time.

Patrick Phillips restored the advantage for the Seagulls in the second half, but again the hosts hit back and the sides settled for a share of the points.
