Footscray’s Dream Home gets to art of sleeping rough

The rebirth of Footscray as a creative hub has taken another striking step with the public installation of Dream Home, a sculpture by artist Frank Veldze. The West Footscray artist created the life-sized replica of a miner’s cottage (pictured) from discarded mattress frames collected when he worked as maintenance officer at Ozanam House, which provides crisis accommodation for homeless people. Veldze says Dream Home delves into the nature of a home and what it might mean to lose it, as well as being a meditation on the great Australian dream. It’s now on a prominent site bordered by Moreland, Whitehall and Parker streets, Footscray. Benjamin Millar
