FILM fans are being invited to take a trip down memory lane this week as the iconic Sun Theatre celebrates its 75th anniversary.
When its doors opened in Yarraville in 1938, a telegram arrived from movie star Clark Gable.
“Heartiest congratulations on opening your fine new cinema . . . Stop . . . Best wishes for the future,” it said.
Gable’s Hollywood classic Gone With the Wind will screen at 7pm next Tuesday, with $35 tickets including film, drink, popcorn and a limited edition commemorative gift.
All proceeds will go to Cinema L’orasae, the theatre’s free community screening program in East Timor.
Maytime, the first film screened at the Sun, returns in a special matinee at 11am on Tuesday.
The $20 ticket includes film, luncheon, beverages, and access to the Sun Theatre memorabilia exhibition, on show during the week.
Celebrations wrap up with a free outdoor screening and farewell to the pop-up park on Saturday, May 4. Family favourite The Wizard of Oz will screen at 6pm.
