Altona made a flying start in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league with a 3-2 win over Hawthorn. Footscray fought hard but lost 2-1 to MCC in its season-opener in the same division. In the women’s premier league, Leah Merrett scored a double in Footscray’s 3-0 thrashing of MCC, but Altona was on the wrong end of a 4-1 result against Hawthorn.

Lacrosse

Williamstown began its Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league premiership defence with a 13-6 win over Surrey Park in the season-opener at Bendigo on Saturday. Daniel Jennings and Aaron Lawman fired in hat-tricks for the victorious Fearons. It was a sour start for Footscray, which lost a thrilling encounter 11-10 to Malvern.
