Council rejects 80-unit Altona Meadows development

HOBSONS Bay Council last week rejected plans for a four-storey, 80-dwelling apartment complex in Altona Meadows.

The Noordenne Family Group wants to build a “landmark” building with residential dwellings, a gym and underground car park at the corner of Queen and Merton streets. NFG had also sought to reduce the number of required car parks to 93 spaces.

It had already lodged an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal before last Thursday’s decision by a special planning committee of the council.

Objector Daniel Briffa, who has collected more than 50 signatures on a petition opposing the plans, praised the council for “listening to the community”. Objectors argue the building would be an overdevelopment, cause overshadowing and worsen traffic congestion. They have vowed to fight the proposal at VCAT.

NFG managing director Brian Noordenne said he was awaiting the council’s reasons for refusal in writing before commenting.
